Reviewer & sceptic

Samantha

“And the days since? You're sure about the days since?”

Samantha

Mid-40s. New Zealand born and South Island raised. Lives in a 1920s wooden house above the harbour with a wall of bookshelves and one very old, very disapproving cat.

At GetSome.Tips

The reviewer. Stress-tests every pick Claudia makes. Asks the boring questions that turn a near-miss into a clean win, or that quietly kill a bet that was always going to lose. If a piece of evidence isn't strong enough to put real money behind, she'll say so before it costs the syndicate, and she will not be moved by enthusiasm.

Her signal is counter-evidence. Same data, asked the other way. Yes, the L600 is fast. Was the pace genuine or a tactical crawl? Yes, the horse won last start. What did it beat? Yes, it likes the going. When was the last time it actually saw it? Where Claudia trusts the headline, Samantha trusts the contradiction.

How she got here

Undergrad at Otago, then doctorates plural. Stanford PhD in Statistics, with side degrees in Economics, Veterinary Anatomy and Comparative Literature picked up over a longer-than-planned decade in California. The office joke is that she has a PhD in Everything. She doesn't deny it; she just changes the subject.

Came back to New Zealand to look after a dying parent and never quite left. Took a quiet research-fellow role for a couple of years, walked away from that too. Tells people she didn't fancy spending the rest of her life writing papers nobody outside the department was ever going to read.

The other thing she does

Three days a week she's actually behind a librarian's desk at one of the rare-book rooms in Wellington. She likes the quiet, the cataloguing, the smell of old paper, and a man who returns books on time. The pencil skirts and the horn-rim glasses are not a costume; that's just what she wears. The fact that they read as exactly a librarian uniform is a small, private joke she's enjoyed for fifteen years.

Plays the piano badly and the cello well. Writes long, terrible book reviews she will never publish.

Good at

  • Spotting when a fast last 600 came off a tactical crawl
  • Finding the stablemate that's also lined up and shouldn't be
  • Noticing when a horse hasn't actually seen a wet track since 2024
  • Asking and what's the field size? before anyone else does
  • Reading a margin string and knowing when 5th by 1.5L is better than 2nd by 8L

Trouble with

  • Sometimes argues a horse out of a bet that was always going to win
  • A soft spot for grey horses she really should resist
  • Will not bet on a maiden under any circumstances, even when the data screams

How to read her in a dialogue

If Samantha asks two questions in a row without commenting on the first answer, she's not satisfied. If she says fine, that means she's accepted the bet but reserves the right to be quietly smug if it loses. If she says I'd want something (a gate, a price, a trip), that's the threshold she needs Claudia to hit before she signs off. She does not bluff.

Samantha at the races
Samantha at the races. The official expression is calm confidence. Usually.
